Mahavir Foundation Trust is a collective of some of the leading citizens of Vadodara who have excelled in life and who have been working to return something to the society thru upliftment of the weaker sections of society. The group includes accomplished Professionals from all walks of life, Businessmen, Industrialists, Builders and Developers etc – all dedicated to the cause and are willing to contribute both time (very precious!) and money. MFT has strictly adhered to the five Guiding Principles viz. Personal assessment of beneficiaries through house visits, No religion, caste or gender-based discrimination, Continuity of Support, No administrative expenses (admin expenses being met directly by members), and upholding Self-respect of beneficiaries.
Here is a glimpse of a few key initiatives:
Adopted Schools – The Programme started in 2001, aims at supporting, encouraging and guiding students from the schools that caters to economically weaker sections of our society. Prizes are given to rank holders and scholarships are given bright and needy students. Opportunities are also provided for over all development. During 2016-17, over 495 students from ten adopted schools were supported.
Asha Deep – A Street-to-school initiative with focus on education and development of children of families living on footpaths / slums etc – children who would otherwise be totally deprived of any meaningful education – children whose parents can just make two ends meet through hard work and have no time / inclination to provide for their education. Sixteen centres on footpaths and slums (right where the children are) with over 400 students with amazing commitment from members, volunteers and teachers – an initiative that has now become a darling of the citizenry
Asha Deep Mentor- Sponsor Initiative MFT realizes that the children cannot be left to street schools for all time to come. Once the children (and families) get hooked to education, they are put into good schools and the brightest amongst them are taken up for intensive centralized coaching at Shannen School. Seventy such students are currently covered (with more to follow next year) and knowing the need for special attention, student-teacher ratio is well below ten! No wonder then that a number of these children are –outshining their peers in regular schools
Open Scholarship and Samvedana – the largest flagship event, covering over 3000 bright and needy students and their families through financial support (scholarships) as well through need-based provision of clothing, toys and other household items (collected from well-off sections of society). Once initiated, the support continues all through their education (one of the guiding principles). A large number of students supported in past are now with leading companies and businesses while also extending a helping hand to other needy students
Kayakalp – High school is the defining time for all students. However, even the very bright from these sections are put at a great disadvantage as they cannot afford effective coaching, leading to poor performance and severe impact on future carriers. Kayaklp – the latest initiative – has picked up 125 such promising students and is providing them best of coaching and guidance at no cost, with daily three-hour classes being run at The Mother’s School, Gotri. Comprehensive personality development, additional computer and spoken English skills and carrier guidance and counselling are also included in this unique initiative. With tremendous appreciation from current students and their parents, MFT plans to start a second such centre from June, 2018
We strongly believe in networking with other organizations (like the two schools mentioned above) and people at large and this enables us to carry out all our activities effectively, even with extensive physical infra-structure of our own!
Current Student Profiles
|Rohit Laljibhai Rami had to drop out of school after 8th as his father expired and the family had no support system with his mother working as household help. He was working as an assistant on a mobile food cart for a year when Mahavir Foundation Trust got him admitted in 9th std. assuring him and his mother of full support. He passed 9th std. with flying colours (above 82% marks) and is very confident of doing well in Board Examinations. MFT / Asha Deep is indeed very proud of his performance and his drive and feels gratified to have moulded a precious life!||Rubina Mustakbhai Sheikh has been another great shining star of Asha Deep initiative. Her mother expired four years ago and her father is blind but still manages to sell water pouches at the Railway station to make ends meet. Rubina is driven to make the best of the opportunity she has got which can be seen by her performance – 96% marks!|
|Rozina Saherwala started her journey with MFT since 2009-10(11th Science). Her father earned limited salary as an accountant in a retail shop, which was grossly inadequate to realize her dream of becoming an Engineer.
Many in her community as also close relatives advised her parents to avoid heavy debts for such costly education for a girl child. But with MFT’s timely financial support, her determination and with her parents’ wishes, she opted Science stream. She completed her 12th with flying colors and ranked 1st in BE – Electronic & Communication from a reputed University. Along with higher financial assistance, MFT also closely mentored and motivated her.
She got campus placement and is presently working with IBM at Pune.Rozina says “MFT is like my family”
|Dharmesh Vankar belongs to a poor family, father is a Mason & mother a homemaker. Family income was not enough even to pay for expenses of school education.
He got connected with Mahavir Foundation Trust during 10th Std. From thereon, to completion of his studies ( CS + M.Com + Company Secretary) , MFT has provided financial support and other Samvedana support (like notebooks , textbooks , clothing for whole family etc.) Further, MFT members also enquired about food and other health matters for the whole family to ensure that there no other hurdle. This assistance has kept him motivated throughout his studies. Since last few years, he has been working as Company Secretary in a reputed company
|Parth Mukesh Parmar is in std 9th. Father is a freelance plumber and mother is helper in Blood Bank. In spite of Parth scoring above 82%, they were unable to pay for tuition as Parth has four siblings.
With Kayakalp coming in existence, Parth now clearly sees the roadmap to realize his ambition to pursue CA or CS
|Indu Prajapati would like to opt for one of the IITs. She is a bright student but her father is a tile worker and mother does stitching from home. With four other siblings (two of them at University level), she had almost given up on her dream until Kayakalp came along!|
Contributions: All contributions are to be in the name of Mahavir Foundation Trust. While our preference is for open-ended (unencumbered) funds so we could use these on need basis, we will also be glad to accept contributions for specific initiatives. In case of Asha Deep Mentor-Sponsor and Kayakalp initiatives, you could even sponsor a certain number of students for one or more years@ US $ 400 / Rs 25,000/- per student, per year. We will be covering close to 100 students in Asha Deep – MS and close to 400 students under Kayakalp.
